Roof recovering is roofing over an existing membrane. This requires that special considerations be taken.
- Check for moisture: trapped moisture may cause blisters, damage insulation and, in some cases affect the structural integrity of the deck.
- Check structural load capacity: make sure that the existing roof can withstand the additional weight of a new roof assembly.
- Remove walkway pads and all wood blocking: do not roof over wood blocking and walkway pads. Make sure that the existing roof provides a smooth substrate for the new roof.
- Remove gravel surface: remove all gravel surface with a power broom or vacuum to ensure a smooth surface.
- Remove and replace wet materials: these can affect the performance of the roof system.
- Remove coatings: this can be done with a power washer.
- Remove old flashings
Repair blisters and ridges to achieve a flat substrate. Then make sure the roof surface is free of all dirt and debris.
